Free E-Mail & Discussion List!

Yahoo is offering free e-mail. The cost is borne by advertising which each Yahoo user will see displayed while retrieving messages. Netscape and Hotmail offer similar services. A very powerful and popular service is offered by Google.

Before visiting any of these sites to enroll, there are some choices to consider.

What would like for your login name to be? Many people choose their first initial and last name, such as jkennedy or hclinton. This is easy to remember, both for you and for persons who wish to write to you. However, many common names are already used, so be prepared with second and third choices. For example, John M. Smith might choose jsmith, jmsmith, or even john_smith.

Next you will need a secret password. This should be at least four characters long. Longer passwords provide more security. Don't use your own name, or best friend's name, or pet's name, or anything else which someone might easily guess! The most secure passwords are random combinations of letters and numbers, such as pf4th7, but be sure to choose something you can remember!

Now you will need to visit a school or library which offers public use of a Web browser program (like Mozilla or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and access to the Internet. Tell the Web browser program to visit the site you have chosen and enter the required data.

Read the resulting message and follow the rest of the displayed directions. Read each question carefully before entering your answer.

After all the above is completed, you will be enrolled as an email user. Any time you wish to check your mail or send a message, just point any Web browser at the location defined by your email service - and have fun!
