Windows NT4 Security |
The purpose of this table is to help summarize the basic elements of Windows NT4 security, and to identify the names assigned to these elements so that NT4 students can learn to administer them. Corrections and enhancements are eagerly solicited.
| Shares | 1) Define what resources (drives, folders, files, printers) are available via the network. Set from the object's context menu on the server. |
| 2) A User account is still required. Set from the server's User Manager. | |
| 3) Can be mapped to a logical drive letter on a client machine. Set from the object's context menu on the client. | |
| Accounts (Users and Groups) |
1) Account Policies: define User log-in and password rules. Set from the server's User Manager. |
| 2) Security Permissions: what resources (drives, folders, files, printers) Users can access (nouns). Also the degree of access (none, list, read, add, change, full). Only work on NTFS drives. Set from the server's Explorer context menu. | |
| 3) User Rights: what actions Users can take (verbs). These are generally system rights, such as "access this computer from a network", "change the system time", "add workstations to a domain", etc. Set from the server's User Manager. |
